Introduction to the programme

Course objective

This short course aims to enhance the knowledge of the participants about the business and human rights framework and different international non-judicial grievance mechanisms that civil society organisations can use to address business-related human rights abuses. After the course participants are able to argue to what extent a company is responsible for adverse human rights impact and understand whether filing a complaint with an international grievance mechanisms is likely to be a promising intervention strategy for obtaining remedy in a particular case.

 

Online sessions

This course consists of 4 online sessions to cover the content of the learning trajectory. After each virtual classroom you will receive a link to quiz to recap the content shared in that week. All the sessions will take place from 15:00 – 17:00 CEST (Amsterdam summer time).

 

 

– 15 May – Introduction to the business & human rights framework

– 29 May – Human rights due diligence

– 19 June – Non-judicial grievance mechanisms and the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises

– 3 July – Independent Accountability Mechanisms and steps to file complaints with non-judicial grievance mechanisms

 Reading material, homework and hand-in assignments.

In between the online sessions you will receive homework and reading material that will help you understand and further explore the material covered in the online session. The homework consists of reading material, videos and hand-in assignments. The work load for the learning trajectory is approximately one to two hours per week in addition to participating in the online sessions.

Quizzes

Also, every week throughout the learning trajectory you will receive a recap quiz via email. The quizzes will not be used to test you and will not be graded. They are meant to keep you on track with learning trajectory and probe whether you have understood the material covered.

Personal case development

To maximise learning results participants are asked to apply the course’s content to one specific case of business-related human rights abuse throughout the whole trajectory. As the course specifically discusses international non-judicial grievance mechanisms, it is preferable that your case has an international dimension (e.g. involves multinational company, international development bank or other financier, international supply chain linkages). It also preferable that you have direct knowledge about the case and are already supporting the affected people / community to address this case of corporate misconduct.
